Project Overview
The Coxs River Road Upgrade is a significant infrastructure project jointly funded by the NSW and Australian Governments, aiming to improve safety and reduce congestion along the Great Western Highway at Little Hartley. This $232 million initiative involves widening and realigning a 2.4 kilometre section of the highway, transforming it into a dual carriageway to facilitate smoother traffic flow. The project commenced in April 2023 and is slated for completion in 2025.
Scope of Work
As a key partner in this transformative project, Shotcrete Australia was entrusted with critical ground engineering tasks, including:
- Soil Nailing and Anchoring: Installation of numerous soil nails and anchors to reinforce and stabilise the newly constructed embankments.
- Shotcreting: Application of over 1,000 square meters of shotcrete to secure embankments and install strip drains, ensuring long-term durability and effective water management.
- Spider Plate Installation: Deployment of spider plates to enhance slope stability and support the structural integrity of the highway.

Challenges and Execution
The project presented several challenges, including working at heights and navigating tight access conditions. Despite these complexities, Shotcrete Australia’s experienced team successfully delivered all ground engineering works, adhering to stringent safety and environmental standards set by Transport for NSW and the principal contractor, Ertech. The collaborative effort ensured that all milestones were achieved on schedule and within budget.
Community and Economic Impact
Beyond enhancing transportation efficiency, the Coxs River Road Upgrade has significantly contributed to the local economy by creating approximately 530 jobs during its construction phase.
Shotcrete Australia is proud to have played a pivotal role in the Coxs River Road Upgrade, a project that not only improves road safety and reduces congestion but also fosters economic growth and community development in the region. Our commitment to excellence in ground engineering continues to support Australia’s infrastructure advancements.
