Transforming Healthcare: Shotcrete Australia’s Role in John Hunter Hospital Upgrade

In 2023, Shotcrete Australia was awarded the contract for ground retention works at the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct by our partners, Health Infrastructure NSW, and Multiplex Construction. The John Hunter Hospital upgrade is part of a $835 million investment by the NSW Government to create a world-class health, research, and education facility in Newcastle.

This major infrastructure project aims to expand the hospital’s capacity, ensuring the local and regional communities have access to innovative healthcare services. The project includes the construction of a seven-storey Acute Services Building that will house expanded emergency services, new intensive care units, operating theatres, and state-of-the-art facilities to support healthcare innovation.

Shotcrete Australia was proud to play a significant role in delivering the vital ground retention and slope stabilisation works required to ensure the structural integrity of the site. As part of the early works contract stage our scope of works included the installation of permanent and temporary anchors, rock bolts, and the application of shotcrete for various retaining walls and foundation structures. Throughout this project, Shotcrete Australia drilled and installed hundreds of ground anchors primarily with our Jun Jin production drill rig, but also with our Casagrande C6 drill rig which was used to drill and install significant raft foundation anchors.

All work was delivered on time and within budget, with each milestone successfully met by our team. The retention works, particularly in the critical areas supporting the new Acute Services Building, were completed efficiently, drawing positive feedback from our partners at Multiplex Construction and Health Infrastructure NSW

Shotcrete Australia is honoured to be part of this transformative healthcare project, which will improve medical services and enhance health innovation for the Hunter region. The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct is expected to be completed by 2026, with its benefits extending to future generations.
